Kanha National Park — Land of the Barasingha
Kanha National Park is one of India's largest and most well-managed tiger reserves, located in Mandla and Balaghat districts, Madhya Pradesh. Established as a National Park in 1955 and declared a Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger in 1973, it spans over 940 sq km in the Maikal range of the Satpura hills.
Kanha is the only home of the hard-ground Barasingha (swamp deer), saved from the brink of extinction here. The park inspired Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book and is home to Bengal tigers, leopards, wild dogs, sloth bears, Indian gaur, and over 300 bird species.
The landscape blends towering Sal forests, bamboo groves, open meadows (maidans/chaurs), and winding streams — creating diverse habitats that make every safari drive unique. The park mascot 'Bhoorsingh' the Barasingha symbolises one of India's greatest conservation triumphs.
Head straight to Kanha Zone for your first morning — the maidans open up at sunrise and you'll see Barasingha herds in golden light. If alarm calls start near Shravan Tal, stay patient. I've guided here for 15 years and this forest always rewards patience.

Kanha Jungle Safari
A gypsy safari is how you truly experience Kanha. Managed by the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department, each drive takes you deep into Sal forests and open meadows with a trained naturalist and driver — close enough to feel the forest breathe.
The park's 940+ sq km is divided into 4 zones — Kanha, Kisli, Mukki, and Sarhi — each with its own character. From golden maidans where Barasingha graze to dense forests where tigers patrol, no two drives are ever the same.
A Day on Safari
A soft knock, a flask of chai. The forest is blue-grey and cool, with langurs already chattering as you head to the gate.
Permits checked, engine humming. Alarm calls of chital echo across the meadow — the jungle is already talking.
Fresh pugmarks on the dusty track. Your naturalist cuts the engine. Barasingha lift their heads. Everyone holds their breath.
Cameras full, hearts fuller. Hot poha and stories swapped over chai before the afternoon drive.
